Dr Arnaldo Delli Carri PhD CEng MIMechE SFHEA
Dr Arnaldo Delli Carri is Curriculum Lead and Associate Professor in Stress and Dynamics in the School of Engineering at Coventry University, United Kingdom, and Course Director for the BEng/MEng Mechanical Engineering degree programme.
He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE), and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Dr Delli Carri's research is in nonlinear structural dynamics, covering:
He has worked with AgustaWestland, Rolls-Royce, and GKN Aerospace on structural dynamics projects, and that industrial work supplies many of the examples in his teaching.
Building Intuition Through Exploration: Dr Delli Carri's teaching begins with the questions "What is this concept really about?" and "What does it change in the world around us?"
Rather than opening with equations and theorems, Dr Delli Carri builds intuition first: where a principle came from, what problem it was invented to solve, and what happens when it is applied, or ignored.
The applets on this site grew out of that approach. They give students a place to experiment with counterintuitive engineering behaviour until it starts to make sense.
Dr Delli Carri has taught in Higher Education for over 15 years, across several European institutions. That experience shaped a set of convictions about what engineering education should be:
Dr Delli Carri recognised that many engineering students struggle not for lack of ability, but because traditional teaching methods don't always align with how humans naturally learn complex, abstract concepts. Mathematical formulations and static diagrams, while essential, often fail to convey the dynamic, interconnected nature of engineering phenomena.
"The best way to understand complex concepts is to interact with them."
Each lecture and simulation is built to help students:
Dr Delli Carri is a proponent of open educational resources: the whole platform is free to students, educators, and self-learners, with no login and no institutional gate.
The project is open source, and he welcomes contributions from anyone teaching or studying engineering.
Dr Delli Carri welcomes feedback, suggestions, and collaboration opportunities related to engineering education and the Explorable Explanations project.
